Periodic Inspections

Periodic Testing involves the testing of electrical services and systems that conduct electricity around a building. It covers all of the hard wiring in a building and includes items such as main panels, distribution boards, lighting, socket outlets, air conditioning and other fixed plant.

The testing involves performing a sequence of rigorous visual inspections and electrical tests on all systems in the building.

A careful check should be made of the type of equipment on site so that the necessary precautions can be taken, where conditions require, to disconnect or short-out electronic and other equipment which may be damaged by testing.

As part of a periodic inspection, we will perform a full safety check on all electrical installations in your workplace. We start with a visual inspection. Following this, a more detailed investigation using ETCI (Electro-Technical Council of Ireland) approved electrical installation test equipment is sued. Evolve Power Solutions will provide you with a detailed inspection report highlighting any issues found and actions needed to rectify these issues.

A periodic inspection ensures a safe workplace for all employees and is a vital part of the Health & Safety program for any business. In fact, the ‘Safety, Health And Welfare At Work’ Statutory Regulation 89(b) of SI 299 2007 as amended by SI 732 2007 states that all employers are obliged to hold a valid Periodic Inspection Report.

A periodic inspection will:

·    Highlight possible electric shock risks in addition to

      fire hazards.

·    Show any electrical circuits or equipment that are overloaded.

·    Show up faulty electrical work.

·    Reveal any lack of earthing or bonding.

How often are they needed?

Periodic inspections of electrical equipment should be carried out every 5 years for commercial properties.

This can either be a single, full inspection every 5 years or annual inspections carried out each year over a 5-year period. Annual inspections will ensure that electrics are checked once a year for faults.

Emergency Lighting

The purpose of emergency lighting is to ensure the lighting is provided promptly, automatically and in a timely manner, when normal power supply to the lighting fails. The main purpose is to ensure that people within the building can evacuate safely in the event of an emergency.

Emergency lighting can be powered by means of local self-contained batteries mounted within the emergency luminary.

An alternative method is to use a central battery wired via a dedicated network to the emergency fittings.

Emergency lighting will illuminate the primary route of escape, in the event of an emergency, to show and direct people to the safest way out of a building.

Owners of commercial or public buildings are legally obliged to install and maintain emergency lighting systems inside their premises. In addition to this, strict regulatory requirements laid down in IS3217:2013 (Irish emergency lighting standards) need to be adhered to. This means that property owners are responsible for ensuring that both quarterly inspections and annual tests are carried out. They are also responsible that these are recorded in the appropriate logbook.

PAT Testing

What Is PAT Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (commonly known as PAT or PAT Inspection or PAT Testing) is a process in Ireland by which electrical appliances are routinely checked for safety.

Employers and employees are now legally obliged to take reasonable steps to ensure that all electrical equipment is safe to use.

Regular PAT testing is required for electrical appliances such as kettles, computers, powers tools etc. This regular testing ensures that the equipment is safe to use for a specified period of time. This period of time dependent upon the appliance and also the environment in which it is being used.

All our qualified engineers are specialists in electrical testing and provide a reliable, professional and nationwide service to companies, theaters, educational institutions and other types of organisations.

As experts in PAT testing throughout the greater Dublin area, we can help you meet your legal requirements in this regard. Our engineers use correctly calibrated professional PAT Testing machines.

What is involved in PAT testing?

All equipment undergoes an initial visual inspection to ensure both the flexible cable and the appliance are free from wear and tear, damage, and signs of burning. Plugs are also inspected for correct wiring. Using PAT testers we can test if the appliance has passed or failed testing including earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance. This is a relatively quick process which shows if the appliance passed or failed to show show safe your portable appliances are. Once each appliance completes the test, they will be labelled with a safety sticker with a bar code for ease of tracking in the future.

What does our PAT testing offer?

·       Reduces the risk of electrical shock

·       Ensures you comply with legislation

·       Protects your employees at work

·       Avoids legal penalties and fines

·       Protects your insurance policy

·       Prolongs the life of the equipment

·       Reduces downtime in your business

Who is responsible for PAT testing?

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulation’s S.I NO.299 of 2007 means that there is a requirement under Irish law that all businesses carry out PAT Testing on all portable appliances. This is to ensure the safety and welfare of both employees and customers.

Employers are held 100% responsible for the safe maintenance of portable appliances (anything with a plug- kettle, PCs, laptops, toasters, servers etc.)

House Rewiring

With many years of experience, Evolve Power Solutions specialise in house rewiring and will always provide an excellent service.

What is involved in a house rewire is the replacement of the current electrical wiring with new and importantly safer wiring. More often than not, electrical systems which have been present for many years in older homes are not up to modern electrical standards. Another reason why a House Rewire is very important is due to the demand on today’s electrical house wiring is much greater due to the many appliances, lighting and also home entertainment. These require greater capacity and many older home electrical systems are unable to meet these demands. Therefore it is recommended that you rewire your house at least every 25 years if not more often.

Not only does this make your house safer, it can also solve problems such as blown fuses. Typically, we can rewire occupied houses within a week. Evolve Power Solutions’ service includes chasing walls and we always provide RECI certificates upon completion of works.

Why Rewire Your Home?

Faulty electrical wiring can lead to fires or cause damage to electrical equipment so you should have your electrical system regularly checked by a RECI registered electrician to check that your wiring meets the required standards.

Rewiring your house will dramatically improve the safety of your family by removing hazards that cause fire or accidental electrocution. The many reason for rewiring your home include;

·    Improved safety

·    Improved comfort

·    Convenience

·    Increased Resale value

Notice of Potential Hazards

Notice of potential hazards may be issued by Registered Electrical Contractors (REC) who carry out installation works. If a potential hazard is observed the REC has an obligation to inform the electricity consumer of any immediate or potential hazard. It is important to note that any potential hazard may not necessarily be associated with the REC’s contract of works.

Once observed, if the electricity consumer or REC is not in a position to rectify the hazard immediately, the REC should then issue a notice of potential hazard or NoHz as it is also known. Within the NoHz the associated National Rules for Electrical Installations must be listed as well as the ET101 rule breach number(s), and a brief description of each applicable hazard. The original or White Copy of the NoHz is then given to the person responsible for the Electrical Installation (electricity consumer) and the carbon copy or Yellow Copy of the NoHz should be posted to Safe Electric. This should be done immediately or no later than two working days from the date of issue. The third or Blue Copy of the NoHz is retained by the REC. When Safe Electric receive their copy they then contact the electricity customer advising them of the hazards and recommended course of action. Where deemed necessary, Safe Electric can escalate the issue and will send a copy of the NoHz to the HSA.
